Rozomé - Japanese Wax Resist

Workshop description: The skills and techniques of Rozomé will help you transform simple batik into extraordinary fiber art. In this five day workshop we will experiment with a number of traditional wax and dye application techniques unique to Japan such as brushing, rolling, sprinkling, stamping and stenciling and continue into more intermediate level work, learning the extraordinary han-bosen half-resist and sekidashi barrier resist techniques. The course will cover a number of dye application techniques such as bokashi the controlled dye shading that produces such luminous results on silk. Demonstrations of all processes, historical background, samples from the instructors extensive collection, slides and video of contemporary work being produced in Japan and abroad will be included.

Instructor bio: Betsy Sterling Benjamin is the author of “The World of Rozomé: Wax Resist Textiles of Japan” an extensively illustrated history of this unique Japanese batik process. In addition she is an accomplished fiber artist with over thirty-five years of experience with wax resist dyeing and designing kimono. The recipient of numerous awards, she has exhibited her work in more than fifty shows worldwide, with solo exhibitions in Japan, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Germany, England and the USA. She first went to Japan in 1981 to research Japanese costume and traditional fiber resist techniques. After 18 years in Kyoto doing textile research, exhibiting, lecturing and writing on textiles she returned to the USA where she maintains a working studio, teaching at Mass. College of Art and NH Art Institute. She is the coordinator of the World Batik Conference- Boston 2005 and curator of the Rozomé Masters of Japan Exhibition that toured to USA in 2005 – 2006.
