October 1-5, 2008 Layers of Color using Water Soluble Resists Ann Johnston
Workshop description: This class concentrates on the variables possible when fabric is dyed in layers, both wet and dry surfaces and thick and thin colors. Students will try all the possibilities and learn how to decide which approach to take and which recipe to use to get their desired results. Each piece of fabric will be dyed several times at least, including students' own previously dyed fabric brought to class. As many surface application techniques as possible will be demonstrated, but students will chose their own focus, subject, design, colors. Water soluble resists will be demonstrated, explained and available for students to use in class. Instructor bio: First, Ann learned to sew, then she learned to dye fabric. In between, she earned degrees in Literature and Geography, married, had two sons, and taught school in several countries. By now, Ann has been making quilts and putting dye on fabric for over 25 years. Her years of experimentation have led to mountains of hand dyed fabric and quilts, thousands of miles of travel, numerous exhibitions and articles, four books, and not a few aches and pains. Ann is the author of Color by Design: Paint and Print with Dye (AJ, 2001), The Quilters Book of Design(QDP, 2000), Color By Accident: Low Water Immersion Dyeing (AJ, 1997), and Dye Painting! (AQS, 1992). She teaches workshops, lectures, and exhibits her fabric and quilts both nationally and internationally. Tuition: $425.00 Level: All students should have some previous dye experience. Materials Fee: $30-$50 |
