August 7-10, 2008 Color and Content: Screen Printing and Painting Heather Allen-Swarttouw Workshop description: The focus of this workshop is exploring personal imagery and dynamic color combinations thru journaling and direct application of thickened Procion MX dyes. Each day we will begin with journaling as a source of inspiration and a series of small spontaneous studies of the various techniques. We will experiment with mark making, pattern and image possibilities using screen printing in an intuitive painterly way. Stencils and masks, resists and Thiox discharge will continue our exploration of personal marks and iconography. Through studies, you will develop a sense of the techniques and a sense of your relationship to color and personal iconography. Ideas generated will be explored on a larger scale through rich layered surfaces. Instructor bio: Heather Allen-Swarttouw is known internationally for her architectural rendering of doorways and staircases in fiber. She has a passion for color, pattern and creating visual illusion in her work, which varies from woven and painted rag rugs, to floor cloths, collages and art quilts. While her work explores an emotional and spiritual response to intimate architectural spaces, it is neither literal nor abstract. The work combines mystery, beauty, and nostalgia to invent a distinctive sense of space. Allen-Swarttouw received her BFA in Painting and Sculpture from the University of New Hampshire and a MFA in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Her work is shown nationally and internationally and is in the collections of the Racine Art Museum (WI). She has received a NEA Regional Fellowship, a TN Arts Commission Fellowship and two artist residencies at Centrum Center for the Arts (WA). Her work has appeared in Fiberarts Magazine, Surface Design Journal, American Craft Magazine, Art Quilt Magazine, Fiberarts Design Book V, VI, and VII, and International Textile Design. Following her love of journaling, she wrote "Journaling and My Creative Process" in the Summer 2003 issue of Surface Design Journal. Tuition: $350.00 Level: All Materials fee: $20-$40 |
