Makiage and Origami Shibori

Patricia Freiert

Workshop description: Makiage workshop
This two-day workshop will focus on shaping techniques for the makiage stand. Makiage is the shibori technique in which a wide variety of shapes are stitched, gathered and then bound or capped to complete the resist. It enables the designer to create both abstract patterns and representational pictures or images on fabric of any width. These techniques are also used for capping areas to keep all dye out The stand used acts as a third hand which allows the binder to increase the tension and create a crisp design. Traditional and non-traditional uses of this stand will be presented. . Patricia will bring traditional and contemporary examples and photographs for study and inspiration. Previous experience with shibori is not necessary. Participants will complete at least six samples on practice fabric and scarves. An adapted table version of the traditional makiage stand will be included with the materials provided for the course.

Workshop description: Origami shibori
"Origami shibori" refers to new ways of folding and tying fabric to create the resists. The various folds make possible a wide variety of geometric patterns, usually striped. The techniques and results are very different from itajime or traditional folding and clamping. Hand basting holds the folds in place before tying. The folding techniques can be worked on yardage as well as relatively small narrow widths of fabric. They work well on open weaves such as gauze or chiffon, but can be effective on heavier weaves especially when using dyes mixed from several colors which then penetrate the folds at different rates and result in two or more colors from one bath. Discharging and over-dyeing produce interesting results which the class will explore. At least six folding techniques will be presented so that participants can work their samples on a variety of fabrics and scarves. Patricia will bring examples and pictures. Previous experience with shibori is not necessary.

Instructor bio: Patricia Freiert was introduced to shibori through a gift from a Japanese friend in 1988. Although professionally a classicist who had spent a career teaching Latin and art and archaeology, a year in Japan opened her eyes to shibori’s wide range of techniques and possibilities and kindled anew a love affair with textiles.

Upon returning to Minnesota she began taking workshops and studying various shibori techniques and dyeing. She began teaching, showing and selling her work in 1996 and has since spent another year in Japan studying with two Japanese instructors. Her work is noteworthy for the wide variety of techniques that she uses to create patterns and textures, as well as the way in which she exploits the possibilities of various dyes within one piece. This work which has been recognized by a number of awards, has been exhibited in Japan and America in galleries, shops and major craft shows including those of the American Craft Council and Minnesota Crafts Council.
