INDIGO SOLUTIONS:
Eight Fibers/Five Variables/ One Lye-Thiox Stock

       Ruth Walker

Workshop description: Do you ever wonder what the right indigo conditions are for the fibers you are using, whether you’ll succeed in producing fabric that has fast blue color, the luster and body with which it began, and structural stability over the long haul? Then it’s time to experiment! The lye-thiox indigo vat is relatively easy to start, use and maintain. To maximize its flexibility on different fiber types we’ll systematically investigate three solution variables: concentration, temperature, pH, rinsing, and Time. Fibers will include natural plant fibers and regenerated cellulose (such as cotton, linen, and rayon), and natural and regenerated protein (such as wool, silk, and SoysilkTM). You’ll leave this workshop with actual experience in making up the stock, the vats, a notebook of samples and a much better understanding of the interactions of synthetic indigo applied in the lye-thiox vat with these fibers under various conditions.

Instructor bio: Ruth E. Wiedenhoeft Walker was born and raised in Wisconsin and Minnesota, received a master’s degree in Botany from UGA in Athens, Georgia, and has resided in Columbia, Missouri since. While yet a student of plant cell biology then-Wiedenhoeft found herself attracted to the smooth, lustrous yarns of 18th-19th century Navajo textiles. She learned to spin wool (now as Walker) in Australia during the mid-‘80s, and to dye, weave, and felt in numerous and varied workshops whilst residing since 1988 in Columbia, Missouri (including a year, however, in Norwich, UK). However, in her enthusiasm in buying beautiful fleeces, she saw that felting pointed the way to using and buying wool more frequently, and feels her work must do those fleeces justice.

Walker’s inspiration comes from the interactions of colors and textures. However, so as to not waste too much time and materials, she’s also very interested in informed experimenting to understand just what’s going on. (After all, it’s from understanding some fundamentals that more informed choices can be made in the effects one desires in the crafting of one’s art, right?) She has taught her felting and dyeing methods to experienced fiber students and the inexperienced-but-curious at workshops in Colorado, England, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Virginia, from park shelters to university classrooms. Her introduction to indigo dyeing came from Carol Leigh Brack-Kaiser of Hillcreek Fiber Studio, with whom she apprenticed in 1989.
