Supplies

Diazol Direct Dye Powder
PRO Thick SH
Synthrapol
Metaphos
Urea
Common salt

Procedure

1. Scour the fabric by machine washing in HOT 140EF (60EC) water, or by hand in a pot on the stove with ½ tsp (2 gm) PRO Dye Activator or Soda Ash and ½ tsp (2.5 ml) Synthrapol per pound of fabric (454 gm, or 3 to 4 yards cotton muslin, or 8 yards 8mm China Silk, or 3 Medium T-shirts, or 1 sweatshirt). Rinse thoroughly. This step does not add the dye fixative to the fabric; it prepares your fabric for dyeing by removing any dirt, oil or sizing.

2. For each cup of dye paint use:

¼ tsp (1.25ml)

¼ tsp (1.25ml)

PRO Thick SH
(optional)

Use up to 1 teaspoon (2.6 gm). The amount will vary for each fabric. It is used to control the wicking and migration of the dye paint.

Metaphos (optional)

Use an amount equal to ¼ of the amount of PRO Thick SH used. This will make a smoother paint.

3. Apply the dye paint by hand painting or silk screen printing.

4. Set the dye. Choose one of the following two options.

Curing/batching at room temperature

a. Cover the painted/printed fabric with plastic.

b. Allow to set for 24 hours in a room that does not go below 80EF (27EC).

c. Pastel shades may then be dried with no further treatment.

d. Medium to dark shades are treated in a bath containing 6½ Tablespoons of common salt per gallon of water. This salt bath must be 175EF to 180EF (79EC to 82EC) before adding the fabric.

e. Treat the fabric for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse in cool water and dry immediately.

Steam setting

a. Roll the painted/printed in unprinted newsprint or an old sheet or muslin and then steam for 10 to 15 minutes.

b. Rinse the fabric in 90EF to 100EF (32EC to 38EC) water containing 2 Tablespoons of common salt.

c. Dry immediately.
