Formosul
Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate
Use Formosul to strip color and discharge print on cotton, silk, wool and nylon. Not all colors strip 100%. It is important to work in a well-ventilated area and use gloves, safety glasses and a cartridge respirator fitted with an acid gas/ammonia/formaldehyde cartridge. Always do test samples before working on a large project. For additional information visit our web site at www.prochemical.com.
W Wear rubber gloves, apron, or old clothes and cover work area with
newspapers.
W Dye and stripping utensils should never be used for food preparation.

Procedure
Immersion discharge on one pound (454 gm) of wool or silk.
1. Make the discharge bath by mixing together 2½ gallons (10 liters) 120o to 140oF (50o to 60oF) water and 3 Tbl (48 gm) Formosul in a non reactive metal pot, such as stainless steel or unchipped enamel. Stir until completely dissolved.
2. Add the fiber. Add 1 pound (454 gm) of wet fiber to the discharge bath. Heat discharge bath to a boil (if discharging silk heat water to 180oF (82oC) only). Once hot, very carefully add 3 Tbl (45 ml) Citric Acid Crystals. Stir intermittently for 30 to 40 minutes. The more stirring the more even the discharge results. Rinse well and wash in hot 140EF (60oC) water with ½ tsp (1.25 ml) Synthrapol. Fiber can be over dyed without further treatment. If enough color is not removed, rinse fiber and treat again.
Discharge Printing
1. Mix the thickener paste. Dissolve ½ tsp (3.5 gm) Metaphos in 2 cups (500 ml) of 110o to 120oF (44o to 50oC) water. Slowly add 3 tsp (8 gm) PRO Thick SH while rapidly stirring. Let mixture stand for 10 to 15 minutes or several hours until smooth.
2. Make the discharge paste. This makes 1 quart (1 liter) of discharge paste.

Completely dissolve Formosul in water. It is sometimes helpful to begin dissolving the Formosul the night before you want to make the discharge paste. Once the Formosul is completely dissolved, add the citric acid crystals or dye activator (if necessary) and mix until dissolved. Add the thickener paste and stir until mixed.
3. Apply the discharge paste to the fabric. Print, paint, or stencil the discharge pattern onto the fabric. Let discharge paste completely dry. Steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse well and wash hot with ½ tsp (1.25 ml) Synthrapol and dry.
