PRESIST
Please read directions carefully before startingPresist is a safe water based resist that combines the crisp resist line look of wax and gutta with the safety and convenience of starch paste resist. Areas where Presist is applied will resist the fabric paint or dye, remaining the color of your base fabric. PRESIST WILL NOT WORK WITH IMMERSION DYE BATHS. For additional information visit our website www.prochemical.com.
Basic Presist directions
1. On a flat fabric surface, draw design with a soft pencil or fabric
tint pen. Use fabric compatible with your fabric paint or dye.
2. Apply Presist over your design lines (or apply freehand) using a Fine
Line Applicator, brushes, squeeze bottle, stamp or sponge. Presist can also be screen
printed onto fabric.
3. Let Presist dry uncovered. Do not toss fabric with wet Presist into a
dryer to dry.
4. Once Presist is dry to the touch (not tacky), paint your design with
fabric paints or thickened dyes. For the clearest resist lines, carefully paint up to the
edges of the resist lines.
5. After the fabric paint or dye has dried to the touch, set the paint or
dye according to directions. Presist will not be harmed by heat or steam setting.
6. After fabric paint or dye has been properly set, remove Presist from
fabric by soaking in plain water (any temperature) and washing fabric according to
dye directions. The rinsing process use with dyes will remov any Presist from
the fabric.
Discharge with Presist
1. Paint cotton or silk fabric with unthickened PRO H Reactive dye
according to the dye directions.
2. Let dye dry just to the touch. Silk fabric must be just barely dry in
order to discharge to the lightest color. Cotton will still discharge well to light values
if used 2 to 3 hour after drying. Most of the PRO H Reactive color will discharge to light
shades of color or off white. PRO H Reactive Black H-SPLL and Black H-EGA will discharge
to a light blue. PRO H Reactive Black H-P2RL will discharge to light grays and off white.
3. Apply Presist to the fabric. Applications might include sponge
printing, stenciling, brushing and/or stamping.
4. Let Presist dry completely.
5. Steam set PRO H Reactive dye according to the dye directions.
6. After steam setting the dye, follow the rinsing procedure for the PRO
H Reactive dyes according to the directions. Your discharged design will appear once the
Presist is washed off.
FOR SILK ONLY
After the rinsing procedure is completed, dip the silk fabric in the following
neutralizing solution:
¼ cup white vinegar
1 gallon water
Agitate fabric gently for 5 to 10 minutes in this solution. The neutralizing solution can be reused many times as long as it remains clean. Cover, label and store in your studio out of reach of pets and children. Remove fabric from the neutralizing solution and rinse thoroughly in tap water. Squeeze out excess moisture and hang to dry. For yardage, run fabric through a rinse cycle of water and spin out excess moisture.
Technical Notes
- Do not rinse or soak fabric with Presist until after fabric paint or dye has been set, or the resist line will dissolve. Presist will not work with immersion dye baths.
- For design variations, thin Presist with different amounts of water, apply to fabric, and then paint over areas covered with Presist. The paint or dye will penetrate through the thinned Presist to the fabric in varying degrees creating shadowed images. Try using dye that is less thickened to seep through the Presist layer to the fabric.
- When setting dyes using a fabric steamer, we recommend wrapping the fabric in unprinted newsprint paper rather than pellon interfacing , as softened Presist sticks to the Pellon. If the newsprint paper sticks to the Presist, it can be easily removed during the rinsing procedure.
