Citric Acid Crystals: Preferred substitute for Acetic Acid 56%. Use 1 teaspoon to replace 1 teaspoon Acetic Acid 56%. Comes in granular form and does not have an additional shipping charge.

Chem Flakes: Sodium Salt of m-Nitrobenzene Sulfonic Acid, also known as Ludigol. A mild oxidizing agent that prevents reduction of Reactive Dyes during the curing and setting stage of printing and hand painting. It is necessary with H Dyes and optional with MX and F Reactive Dyes.

Colorless Extender: A marbling color without the color. Use colorless extender as a marbling color if you want your fabric color to be part of the design. It is also used to slow the spread of fast colors. Apply drops of colorless extender on the Methyl Cel base, then apply drops of marbling color on top.

Corn Dextrin: Works as a paste resist with Reactive Dyes. Different visual effects are possible by applying the resist using a squeegee, rubber stamp, stencil or spatula. Corn dextrin is not suitable for immersion dye baths; direct application techniques are best.

Dye Activator: The recommended pure alkali powder for use with all reactive dyes on cotton and cellulose fibers. Also used to scour fabric along with Synthrapol (see page 21).

Fix LHF: A liquid alkali used with all PRO H Reactive Dyes to fix hand painting applications at room temperature without steaming.

Fix OR: Liquid fixative necessary when dyeing nylon or wool carpets with the WashFast Acid Dyes.

Formosul: Sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate. It is the preferred discharge for silk and wool which requires steaming. Good ventilation is mandatory as is the use of a respirator with Acid Gas cartridges.

Glauber Salt: Sodium sulfate. Use in place of common salt when dyeing wool, nylon and silk with acid dyes. May also be used with reactive dyes, especially turquoise, to increase color yield.

Glycerin: Glycerin is a liquid auxiliary  used in both of the recipes for making the thickened paste for devoré/burn-out and colored discharge printing using the new Vat Dyes.

Guar Gum: An industrial gum used to thicken the burn out/devoré, paste during burn out processes. Won't break down under strong acid conditions.

Gutta: French for "resist," which forms a barrier on the fabric to create a pattern. It may be water soluble (water based gutta and Sabra Silk Resist) solvent soluble (solvent based gutta or wax) or a heat fixable resin (pigmented gutta).

Lo Crock Binder: Concentrated binder to hold Color Concentrates on the fabric. Mix 2˝ cups water and 1˝ cups Lo Crock Binder.

Lye: Sodium hydroxide. Strong alkali used with vat dyes such as Indigo. Wear protective clothing when mixing Lye and have good ventilation. Always add Lye to cold water !! It is considered corrosive by UPS  and has an additional shipping charge.

Marbling Surfactant: Liquid added to marbling colors that tend to sink into the Methyl Cel base. Add two to three drops, shake, and test. Add marbling surfactant until color floats properly.

Metaphos: Sodium hexametaphosphate. The active ingredient in "Calgon", only in pure form without additives. Use as a water softener and to modify the flow of Thick SH and Thick F, making a smoother paste and improving printing and painting results.

Methyl Cel M112: Methylcellulose. Clear efficient base for floating colors when marbling. Once mixed, it can last up to 4 months.

Monagum: Modified starch gum. Is the only thickener for discharge printing with hypochlorite bleach (Clorox).

No-wick HF: Use with Liquid Decorator Colors to enable fine line drawing. Mix ˝ teaspoon in 2 ounces of Liquid Decorator Color, or 4 teaspoons in 16 ounces.

Pot Ash: Potassium Carbonate. A replacement for dye activator or soda ash. It dissolves very easily.

Potato Dextrin: This paste resist produces lace like patterns and the crackle lines similar to batik, without the use of wax. Potato dextrin is not suitable for immersion dye baths; direct application techniques are recommended.

Print Paste Mix F: A mixed formula in dry form containing Urea, Thick F and Metaphos, in exact proportions so that only water is needed. If too thick, dilute with Urea water (7 teaspoons Urea per cup). Use for silk, nylon & synthetics especially when fine line definition is required.

Print Paste Mix SH: A mixed formula as noted above, but made with Thick SH. Used primarily for cotton and other cellulose fibers, but works great on silk if fine line definition is not critical.

PROsoft K: Removes the stiff and unyielding hand from dyed and painted fabrics. It is a semi-permanent and fragrance free fabric softener. Use PROsoft K on cotton, silks and synthetics and it does not discolor the fabric.

Retayne: A cationic dye fixing agent. Used on cotton fabrics to improve wet fastness of direct dyes and to color paper pulp. Is helpful as an after treatment for reactive dyes where washing facilities are not adequate for complete washout, though tends to lower light fastness qualities.

Soda Ash: Sodium Carbonate. Use as an alkali fixative for reactive dyes. Generally replaced by PRO Dye Activator.

Sodium Acetate Crystals: An acid forming salt that acts as a leveling agent for Sabraset/Lanaset dyes

Sodium Bicarbonate: Bicarbonate of soda or baking soda. A weak alkali used to set reactive dyes by steaming or ironing.

Sodium Bisulfate: Sodium acid sulfate. Colorless to white crystals that form a very strong acid when dissolved in water. Use with the Kiton acid dyes or to burn out cellulose from cotton and cotton blend fabrics. It is corrosive to skin & eyes in solution.

Sodium Bisulfite: See Anti-chlor Concentrate.

Synthrapol LF: A low foaming version of Synthrapol.

Synthrapol SP: A concentrated liquid wetting agent and surfactant compatible with all dye classifications. Use with PRO Dye Activator or Soda Ash to scour fabric before dyeing. Also recommended for the final hot wash of reactive dyes. May also be added to the dye bath to improve levelness and aid wetting out of fiber.

Span A: Fixative for Pigment Dyeing. Used in conjunction with PROfab Pure Color Concentrates.

Span B: Fixative for Pigment Dyeing. Used in conjunction with PROfab Pure Color Concentrates.

Treat B-4: Required pretreatment for Pigment dyeing with PROfab Pure Color Concentrates.

Thick F: Low viscosity, high solids sodium alginate thickener for all reactive dyes. Primarily used for silk, wool & synthetic fabrics when fine line definition is important.

Thick SH: High viscosity, low solids sodium alginate thickener for all reactive dyes. Primarily used for cotton. May also be used for silk and synthetics when type of pattern painted or printed does not require fine line definition as in block printing.

Thiox: Thiourea Dioxide. A safe replacement for sodium hydrosulfite in vat dyeing, discharge printing, and general color stripping on cellulose and protein fibers. Non flammable. Good shelf life if stored in a dry location. Five times stronger than sodium hydrosulfite.

Urea: A synthetic nitrogen compound used as a humectant in printing and painting with all classes of dyes. It also increases the solubility of the dyes.

Wool Assistant SBS: A sodium bisulfite Compound formulation added to the dye bath when dyeing wool with Fiber Reactive Dyes. Allows for a more uniform dyeing not otherwise obtainable. Use a respirator with Acid Gas cartridges while working with this in powder form.
